Gender simply must be at the level of the soul...in the deep & everlasting places within us. God doesn't make generic people - he makes something very distinct-a man or a woman. In other words, there is a masculine heart and a feminine heart, which in their own ways reflect or portray to the world Gods heart. God MEANT something when he meant man (and women) - if we are ever to find ourselves we must find that.
There's feminine men and masculine women and to suggest men who are, as we understand it, 'masculine' are the 'right' definition of what God intended is wrong. Men have both testosterone and oestrogen, although mainly testosterone... so there inevitably is a physical/physiological scale of 'masculinity' on a purely hormonal level.
What is 'masculine?' and what is 'feminine?' is still a cultural and subjective question - so no joy there...
What are the things that are common to ALL men that reflect God's masculine heart and equally for femininity...?
In fact, maybe all men and all women demonstrate something of BOTH God's masculinity and his femininity but to the degree of various things, such as their godliness in relationship with their testosterone level!
I feel a formula coming on! T (Testosterone) G (Godliness) O (Oestrogen) R (degree of reflection of God's masculinity/femininity) E (opportunity to exercise desires birthed by these hormones) C (Cultural influences)
E((T*G)+(O*G)) /C = R
With the assumption that there is a no mans land between even the most feminine results a man would produce and the most masculine results a women would produce - ie no cross over between what is 'man' and what is 'woman.'

I'm still struggling with this.
